St. Thomas Residential Development
New Orleans, Louisiana
Chan Krieger Sieniewicz won an invited competition for the master plan and architecture of a proposed 600 unit, 750,000 square foot mixed use development in the St. Thomas neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. The project occupies 3 city blocks recently created as part of a HUD Hope VI grant in the lower Garden District, one block from the Mississippi River. The project incorporates a mix of market rate condominiums, market rate and affordable rental apartments and a 300 unit continuing care facility. An additional 50,000 square feet of ground level retail and 660 structured parking spaces is also incorporated along key commercial edges of the development. The goals of the project include creating a distinct urban environment through a variety of housing types and open spaces; establishing through block connections between the riverfront and the proposed St. Thomas neighborhood; and creative building massing to provide a transition from the residential scale of the neighborhood to the larger scale of the development. Construction is planned to commence in 2005.
