Connecting the City and the River: Chan Krieger Sieniewicz Presents Winning Scheme
for Shanghai’s Historic Bund Waterfront
- January 2008

In anticipation of the 2010 EXPO, the planning agencies of the City of Shanghai launched a competition for the design of the Bund waterfront on the Huangpu River. In May 2007, the city of Shanghai invited ten firms from countries including the United States, China, Germany, and Australia to create a master plan for the redevelopment of the historic waterfront. In the second phase of the competition, four firms were invited to develop schemes. Chan Krieger Sieniewicz (CKS) was voted first by the jury from among the international finalists.
The CKS design team, led by Alex Krieger and Liang Zhao, together with Klopfer Martin Design Group and Beijing Urbanscape Co., produced a scheme connecting the historic Bund area to the River – and beyond to skyline views of the towering developments in the Pudong district of Shanghai – via an urban park system atop the levee that currently serves more as a barrier between the river and the city than a link.

Knoxville Vision Plan Receives Tennessee APA Outstanding Planning Award - September 2007

The City of Knoxville has received an "Outstanding Planning Award" from the Tennessee Chapter of the American Planning Association for its South Waterfront Vision Plan. Knoxville's Vision Plan entry was judged on criteria that included originality and innovation, quality, comprehensiveness, effectiveness and public participation. The Outstanding Planning Award for a Plan is awarded for a document that demonstrates innovative planning and at the same time is simple to understand and can be easily adopted for use in other communities.
"It's great for our city to be recognized by this award," said Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam. "The South Waterfront Vision Plan is a quality project, and this recognition reflects the time and effort devoted to it by people who care about their community. We still have a lot of work in front of us because the true test of a plan's worth is to make it reality."
Hargreaves Associates was the lead firm in the Vision Plan. Chan Krieger Sieniewicz provided the urban design experience over the course of the two-year planning initiative and developed the Form-Based Code associated with the Implementation phase of the plan.
Greater Boston Foodbank Breaks Ground - June 2007

From the
Boston Globe: "The Greater Boston Food Bank broke ground on a 110,000-square-foot distribution center on South Bay Avenue in the Newmarket area of Boston that officials said would allow it to double its annual distribution, to 48 million pounds. Moving from a facility about half that size, the nonprofit will serve more than 600 hunger-relief agencies in Eastern Massachusetts. The building, paid for with an ongoing $30 million capital campaign "Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope" and built on a former incinerator site across the street from its current location, will have rooftop parking to minimize traffic effects. Designed by Chan Krieger Sieniewicz of Cambridge, it is to open in the winter of 2008-09".

Dallas Downtown Parks Master Plan Receives Texas ASLA Merit Award - April 2007

This parks master plan for the downtown core of Dallas, Texas, responded to calls from the local business community and the Dallas City Council for revitalization of the downtown, increased office occupancy, encouragement of downtown business development, and the provision of amenities for the growing downtown residential population. In partnership with the local engineering firm of Carter & Burgess and landscape architect Hargreaves Associates, three sites were identified for major urban parks within the downtown core, each with a unique character and program, with enhanced pedestrian connections between them.
Chan Krieger Sieniewicz identified changes that would occur to the hierarchy of the streets with the introduction of the new parks, and developed a streetscape palette for the boulevards now serving as primary linkages among these amenities. Building sites adjacent to the future parks were studied in detail to determine their investment potential and capacity for revenue generation.

Jury Comments on A Balanced Vision Plan for the
Trinity River Corridor, Dallas, Texas: “The plan provides a large urban recreation park; a river with restored sinuosity instead of the current artificially-straightened channel; a sensitively-designed road that runs concurrent against the downtown levee and affords park and city vistas; long-term flood protection through levee improvements, parks, and trails; and several hundred acres of community development along the Trinity River Corridor.”
