Federal Security
Urban Design Guidelines
Washington, DC

Chan Krieger Sieniewicz served as architect for the Interagency Security Task Force to identify permanent, comprehensive solutions to the federal government’s response to the immediate threat of terrorism.

Working with over 40 different governmental bodies, the Task Force explored options to replace the jersey barriers, planters and guard huts hastily erected after September 11, and reopen streets currently closed to traffic. Recommendations include a pedestrian-only street or park, tunnel alternatives, improved vehicular roadway, and streetscape beautification projects. A central focus of the study involved the reopening of Pennsylvania Avenue - America's most prominent main street - which runs in front of the White House in Washington D.C.

The plan offers an urban design framework that distinguishes the architectural character of various areas by identifying perimeter security design solutions most appropriate to its character, responding to their unique conditions.
