City Hall Plaza Arcade
Boston, Massachusetts
Completed in January 2001, the City Hall Plaza Community Arcade is the first phase of a larger plaza redesign. The arcade seeks to better define the Cambridge Street edge of the plaza, without completely enclosing the space from the street, and will serve as a spine between the proposed Government Center transit station and JFK tower garden.
The arcade includes three seating platforms, extending beyond the existing granite steps down to the plaza. The platforms serve as public seating areas and "stages" for small performances and speakers, as well as display spaces for the farmers market.
An elaborate lighting scheme highlights the structure and its immediate realm, with computerized L.E.D. "light tubes" mounted to each column, programmed to change colors to mark the hour or a special event. The total construction cost was $2.7 million.
